Lunch Bar Quins registered a 22-13 win over neighbors Impala RFC in the Kenya Cup’s Ngong’ Road Derby at the Impala Club on Saturday 28 January 2012.
With both sides approaching the game cautiously from kick off, it was Quins captain Victor Sudi initiative who provided the first sparks of action when he gathered a loose ball, offloading to his support player Nick Barasa who was help up on the Impala try line. The resultant scrum down saw hosts Impala fail to effectively clear the danger, according Quins scrum half Eden Agero the opportunity to score the easiest of tries with Dennis Muhanji converting for a 7-0 lead after thirteen minutes of play.
Impala would come back strongly, Peter Ocholla’s boot coupled with Kevin Umbuge and Duncan Ekasi’s gain line beating runs gaining them crucial ground. Ocholla crowned this period of Impala dominance with a twenty first minute drop goal that reduced the deficit to 7-3 in favor of the visitors.
Quins fly half Isaac Adimo and Ocholla would trade drop goals as the visitors went into the half time interval holding a 10-6 lead.
Second half action saw Impala begin the match in pursuit of more points, putting Quins on the back foot, their inroads forcing an infringement off their visitors’ forwards. Vincent Mose’s goal attempt from the resulting penalty sailed high and just wide of the sticks but with Quins failing to clear the danger, back row Lawrence Buyachi found himself in possession and space, touching down under the posts with Mose converting to see Impala take the lead for the first time in the game, the scoreboard reading 13-10 in their favour.
Playing with their tails up, Impala kept pushing forward but were twice let down by handling errors, young fullback Ian Minjire played in by Ocholla and Mose respectively but unable to get a grasp of the ball while in space and in full flight.
Loosing possession to their visitors, Impala would concede a try after Adimo found touch deep in their territory, the Quins forwards mauling with Joseph Kang’ethe grounding the ball. The lead had changed hands again, Quins holding a 15-13 advantage as the game remained finely poised heading into the final quarter of this half.
With precious time ticking, the visitors took made a foray into Impala territory. Fullback Chris Oduor would take the sting out of Impala, evading his marker and touching down under the posts with Muhanji converting to extend Quins lead to 22-13, a lead they held to the end.
Quins lock Joseph Kang’ethe was later named the Tusker Man of the Match.
The result saw the defending Kenya Cup champions Lunch Bar Quins register their second win on the trot while Impala’s three match unbeaten streak came to an end.
In other matches, Mwamba RFC edged out Mean Machine 23-20 at the RFUEA Grounds, Strathmore Leos won away, beating Nondies 33-17 at the Jamhuri Park. Nakuru were 32-10 winners over Homeboyz at the Nakuru Athletic Club while Kenya Commercial Bank registered the weekend’s biggest margin of victory, beating visiting Kisumu RFC 57-0 at The Lions Den in Ruaraka.
