Rugby in Rwanda

Rugby in Rwanda is developing in Primary and Secondary schools, Universities and Clubs.

At Primary schools' level, we currently have more than 60 schools where rugby has been introduced with the support of Friends of Rwandan Rugby, a British Association that sends trainers to these schools on a regular basis.

At Secondary schools' level, Rwanda counts more than 45 Secondary schools playing men and women's rugby well. This is why Rugby has been accepted among the games at the interschool tournament organised each year by the Federation of School Sport in Rwanda.

At Higher Institutions' level, Rugby is developed in four public Institutions out of the six in Rwanda namely: Université Nationale du Rwanda (UNR) located in Huye, South Province, Institut Supérieur d'Agriculture of Busogo (ISAE) located in Musanze, North Province, Institut Supérieur d'Education (KIE) located in the town of Kigali and Institut Supérieur de Technologies (KIST) in Kigali.

At Club level, Rwanda has currently 14 clubs and 12 of these take part in the Fifteen Rugby championship organised each year by the Rwandan Federation of Rugby. Among these 14 clubs, 3 organise Seven's Rugby tournaments. It is for this reason that for 2011, these tournaments were organised as follows:

In February the 5th to be precise, the Club Remera Baffaloes R.F.C organised a Seven's Rugby tournament and the first two teams and the best player received some prizes.

On 12 March 2011, the Club Lion de Fer R.F.C organised a tournament that integrated Women and Men's teams. The first two Girls' and Boys' teams received some prizes.

On 7 May 2011, the Club Kigali Sharks R.F.C organised a Seven's Rugby tournament for adults and a Ten's Rugby tournament for the Under 14 in the National Stadium Amahoro . The first two teams and the best player received some cups.

All these events show the development of the game of Rugby in Rwanda.
